Growing up as the youngest of three, with two high-achieving older brothers, I naturally fell into the role of the rule follower. I believed that excelling in school was the only path to success and security. This mindset drove me to never receive a grade below an A—except once in college, when a crummy French professor gave me a B. Applying for a prestigious scholarship, which I didn’t get, was a pivotal moment. The rejection made me realize that my relentless pursuit of academic excellence was more about pleasing others than fulfilling my own passions.
After graduating, I decided to break free from others' expectations and chase my own dreams. I bought a one-way ticket to France to work as a nanny in the Alps, with a family that spoke no English. Immersing myself in a new culture, I learned to drive a stick shift on steep mountain roads.
When I returned, I through my luggage into my cousin's car and moved with her to Portland, OR. It was here that I worked in a movie store, and picked up a guitar, finally learning to play music and sing. During this time, I reconnected with the man from college who shared my dream of farming, and that connection brought me back home.
Returning home to farm wasn’t a straightforward path. It took us ten years to find our perfect farm. In the meantime, we tried living off-grid until our cabin was struck by lightning, pushing us to the edge. During these challenging times, I delved into Brazilian jiu-jitsu, anatomy, and alignment-based yoga, learning to both break and heal the body. These experiences taught me resilience and adaptability, essential qualities for any entrepreneur.
During this period, my husband and I knew we would unschool our children, even before unschooling had a name. My own schooling experience convinced us to encourage our kids to find their own paths and pursue entrepreneurial endeavors to fulfill their unique passions.
Finally, we found our dream farm, and I became pregnant with my first son. We began farming successfully and selling produce at the farmer’s market. My husband started growing flowers for me, sparking my flower bouquet business. But when COVID-19 hit, the hours from the remote administrative job I had to keep us afloat changed diminished drastically. Needing to stay on the farm, continue my flower business, and unschool our boys, I discovered digital marketing. This new path allowed me to balance all my passions and responsibilities.
Today, my digital marketing business is thriving. I’ve transformed my life, and now I help others who feel stuck in their journey, just as I once did. Embracing my unique path and passions has allowed me to create a fulfilling career, stay on the farm, be present for my family, and share my love for flowers and marketing. I invite you to join me on this journey and unlock the potential of your own business. Together, we can turn your dreams into reality.
